Its been a while since we did a double post on clobber, but seen as we find two brands from different spectrums we thought why not.
At Offhand it has and always will be about sourcing and seeking new labels, obscure brands and something new, You may feel this has become much more difficult with many online stores seemingly on the ball, fear not there are still folk out there waiting to be discovered or not it may seem.
Vanishing Elephant is not only a great name but a melting pot of experience run by 3 friends. One of these fine gents was the art director and worked for Marshall Artist and Maharashi. They got together and bounced ideas and creativity off each other resulting in quality and elegance.

Each collections heralds and draws upon the return of gentlemanly style which is what we love. They have made their mark with a classic aesthetic of tailored suits, woven shirts and elegant knitwear.
Its always nice to see a group of people who merge and create something original and be a success with it.
In 2008 the Sydney based label joined forces all with the same vision, Their first collection was released in 2009 and was an instant hit in Australia, thus prompting them to put together their second line and gaining fans from further afield worldwide

There seems to be a theme around today with the modern man opting to include bags in their daily get up, Whether it be a smart man-bag, Tote or backpack, there are lots of options, The messenger bag seem to be a staple piece among gents but for me I love a decent rucksack. Now Seil Marshall is just that, A German company specializing in hand crafted traditional outdoor accessories. Using only the very best materials Seil Marshall believe that the best machines are our hands. Well they certainly put them to good use in creating lovely bright coloured Canoe packs constructed from heavyweight cotton and tanned leather straps.

Its always nice to come across a relatively new brand that evokes excitment among us gentlemen, Im sure you may have already got wind of Batten Sportswear earlier this year. If not then its not too late.
Tokyo born Shinya Hasegawa moved to New York to attend design school. A man already with great pedigree who sourced vintage and outdoorwear from America. He successfully completed his degree and landed a dream job working as understudy to Daiki Suziki at Woolrich Woolen Mills. Where and who better to fine tune your skills with. The inspiration for Batten comes from his passion for not only vintage outerwear but also his love for surfing and will form the backbone of his debut SS12 collection.

Among the beautiful pastel coloured parka's, there are a nice unique collection of surf shorts using bold patterns but getting the contrasting colours bang on. He has made beachwear into streetwear with his own tweaks on classic fit and materials.
One thing which we find very impressive is the fact that Batten Sportswear is a one man operation, Shinya does everything from design and sourcing through to marketing his products. Something seldom witnessed among todays new brands, with determination and passion like this we are sure that this label will evolve into a rather special brand.

It has been a successful year over @ Offhand Hq, many new pastures grazed and opportunities embarked on, Having learned so much from various counterparts its about time we pushed ourselves and covered new ground and seeing what we can really offer.

The forum has become the hub of gents culture, an active community with shops now giving exclusive content to us and us only, collaborations aplenty and the prospect of our first limited run of a garment ready. I really want to thank the members that are involved and the new folk that have discovered us.

With there been so much opportunity for me in so many avenues, we felt something new was needed. Working alongside Fabio at 12thman has evoked and allowed me to pursue my passion, It was wonderful of him to share an old chinese proverb used by one of greatest Italian clothing designers the other day. It gave me inspiration to create our next venture.

Having seen so much talent on offer within our community it felt only right to go back and revisit old ground, We have put together a team of creativity and are going to be working on a series of Fanzines which will be available in digital format and then hard copy, If you remember our previous issues you will know what we can deliver, although these will be different and contain a lot more eclectic content by each individual involved. Its something which has caused a lot of excitment and we are very happy to have got the opportunity to interview certain players in the industry and put together indepth exclusive reviews.

I am not going to give anything away other than it will be an interesting read covering all angles.

Mackintosh...

Its nice to get to delve deep into brands with so much heritage and tradition in the UK. Mackintosh is one of those labels, Been around for a very long time, iconic, steeped in history while forging an identity in gentleman's culture. We have seen some very nice stuff lately from Mackintosh, alongside their staple attire.

Earlier today I checked out the tilt pocket jackets, available in a nice selection of colours, these mid length jackets are similar to a short Belstaff with a tilted chest pocket and the lining chosen by Saki's in Sheffield, A limited jacket certainly looks to be a hit. This my friends is not a trench or a raincoat, its Mackintosh delivering a stylish jacket, timeless in appeal for a very reasonable price. It was nice to know that local fashion aficionados Saki's had an involvement in the design. The fit on these jackets is bang on in my opinion and for the price it is probably the best pound for pound jacket this season.

As we know Mackintosh has been around since 1823 and is synonymous with the trench raincoat. Believe it or not Charles Mackintosh was a chemist when he invented the waterproof fabric. The exact same method is still used to this day.

We have seen the brand evolve over the years producing sophisticated, stylish & traditional designs allowing one to express their individuality.

We always expected something to drop from Fabio this winter, and he has delivered with an array of garments dyed by the yarn, available in some rather subtle yet tasty colours. A welcome addition to the 12th Man collection, and not before time are the Blouson/Jacket. 12thMan have produced something unique, Once again this gents passion and focus shines through with what is probably his best collection yet and more than likely will be his most rewarding.

Somebody now whom I consider a friend, Fabio has always kept our community informed of his ideas and continues to be a valued member. We love his simplistic design and minimal branding. Your become immersed with his drive while he makes sure every process and detail is covered. You may find this obsessive, We just identify his determination to keep 12thMan close to his heart and remain un-diluted with todays lack of inspiration.in a already over saturated market. 12thMan do their own thing, not swayed or influenced by others, merely following the heavy italian tradition of instilling unique production and innovation.

And there will be more in SS12, you can expect an expanded collection and more variety. Fabio works tirelessly driven by his own desire for what he has built single handily from studying the purveyors in Italian fashion. Fabio's sweetheart will be around for a while yet, a sleeping giant which has the potential to surpass everybodies expectation's, The quality speaks for itself and its distinctive perched eagle logo sits perfect againest the well chosen pantone palettes.

The latin meaning equates to : It talks for itself. Res ipsa loquitor is another great blogzine compiled by non other than Benjamin Spenceley, a self proclaimed adrenalin junkie and fitness extraordinaire who also finds time to fullfill his cultural obsession with a subliminal creativity showcasing his artistic side and healthy knowledge of clothing. A well respected member of the Offhand forum and Ironman participant, Ben portrays his blog effortlessly keeping things fresh and diverse with each post.

" The gems in the eye shine in the most irrelevant places but then again in the relevant impartially. I keep my eyes open wide shut and sleep with a shoe on one foot... "

One thing you pick up on over at Res ipsa louitur is the exsquisite use of words and quotes which sit nicely alongside his poems which he shares. Something seldom seen among the content of a culture blog, This place is an extension of the mind, A personal journey to look back on. you feel a sense of knowing Ben, and in my opinion that is what blogging is about, not just reviews of whats hot and what tickles our fancy. There is already too much of that going on.

Packed with a nice list of links for you to explore further, Res ipsa loquitur is perfect reading for those that seek something a touch left of centre but not too obscure. Whatever is next on the agenda in terms of endurance we wouldnt like to guess, just aslong as the good man continues to inform and direct us on his perspective of life then we will be happy.

I am sure we have covered these guys before and I am sure we will no doubt continue to mention the might of End Clothing, since their concept hunting store took stock things have looked so promising for these Northern Gents. Its nice to see another stockists take the helm and offer a array of brands for us to mull over.

There are plenty of other stockists out there all looking to catch up and all finding their niche.

At Offhand we have forged a great relationship with End. Getting to know them and what they have done for our community forum is well respected by all. Its great to have them onboard as our members love what they have on offer and always aware of what is happening over @ HQ.

The thing with End is they offer a vast selection of brands keeping everything inside the box, nothing to fancy, it all flows, You could so easily buy your full wardrobe and not shop anywhere else. With brands like Nigel Cabourn, Visvim, White Moutaineering through to YMC, Folk & Clarks, the choice is perfect for all budgets, but then when did we ever stick to budget.

Its a pleasure to browse their site and catch up on the blog which is always upto date and informative. The customer service is bang on too. With so much choice becoming available today for us fine fettle to squander our pounds notes its the small things that matter.

Oi The Knit Are Here.......

I am sure you are all aware summer will soon be a distant memory and as the night draws close we shall all be digging out something a little warmer. I too am sure that you may well be aware of the influx of knits which have surfaced of late. All the usual suspects have dropped on them. It has to be said a fairly healthy selection is available if your thing. Personally I prefer to either dapper around in a few layers freezing or getting all snug with an almighty winter piece. Knitwear is not for me, It used to be in the late 80's when Gio Goi was hitting the spot and sporting the long knee length heavy Oakland knits, But now naw, A knit aint a knit anymore, We have crazy names and stupid fitted sizes which does not appeal to me one bit.

Yet again what we see is all too evident of todays attire, Styles and brands following suit, playing safe and churning out Fairisle after Fairisle. We expect more, is it too much to ask?

You may well ask there is only so much brands can do with a knit, I dont believe its the case, Today we are seeing organic dying processes, patterns created, even shoes are becoming more exciting than knitwear. There are a host of alternatives available without going all Oki - Ni on folk to experiment with.
Knitwear has been around for yonks, always will be. whether knitted in the mountains of Himalaya or made with the finest wool I sure we all agree that what works best and always has done is a plain simple pullover - one colour, no fads...

Its Our way Of Life..........

Sometimes you or I may well think we are alone as we pursue our obsession's. The fact is there are a lot more gentlemen out there around this world that probably like me live way beyond my means in search of the perfect garment. It doesn't exist, but for me the chase is just as good. Its an education buying fine clothing. you learn with each purchase something different and unique, whether it be about you, the fit or detail of the product. All this carries you into you creating and moulding your own style. To me your character is in your clothing, how bold are you, hidden confidence, masking insecurities, its all there. If you get it right then your true self, your personality will shine through the material objects. We have all made terrible errors when buying only to learn and develop what we perceive looks or feels good.

If like me then you may not see many other similar people with this what some call an unhealthy obsession (ask my partner). We are the people nobody sees, albeit its great to clock another geezer immaculately dressed and share latest buys but seldom does this happen. Why?

Personally I doubt many are that crazy to spend near on £1000 on the next Cabourn or wear £400 pair of shoes. This is what makes it exciting and unique to you, because its a certain league in which not many venture or even understand. We are born with a certain style and its upto your good selves to find it within your life.

Some never do or are even that bothered about what they wear.

We can look around at wince at the many clones of people who populate our cities, following fashion, nobody stands out, or is it that we just don't notice, as some would say because we are so self centred. You can make your own mind up about the last comment.

Luckily now I have had the pleasure of meeting many gents from all backgrounds aged between their teens and over 50 who have embarked on this wonderful journey of seeking their style, I have got to know the people behind some of the finest shops and brands around today, becoming personal friends with most all because of this common ground we share and pursue.

With all the knowledge each person presents they are like a canvas and express themselves in their attire and how they wear it. I am not that pleased that I know more about my fellow comrades pit 2 pit and vital measurements than I do my own partner. Sometimes I wonder and often discuss what it must be like to not have a care in the world about what you wear or how you look. Liberating or unthinkable???

This is an insight into the life of a dresser, the people you never see. But I can assure you there are a whole lot more out there than you think.

You know the Italians throughout time have developed garments which always seem to stand out, especially since I have matured around many Italians designers and seen them grow or crumble in todays fickle market.
Barena Venezia is a rediscovery of tradition and possess a genuine passion inspired by the finer things in life like fishing and agriculture thus becoming functional and creating a unique distinctive style. some brands do not enter the forefront of many gents wardrobe or even make the grade, they can take years to mature and be recognised, sadly some don't even make it and remain sub-conscious to our minds.

Barena has been around for a while now and picked up by all the usual blog - zines. From what I have seen this SS12 collection I am very impressed, lovely soft materials incorporated in their shirts and the outerwear looks lovely too, A bit of history, The firm was founded in 1961 again inspired by a passion for researching culture and tradition coupled with textile development, It must have been a special time back then for innovation and developing garments, You could say Barena was an accident, but the passion and creation created a simple and workable style. Forget what you have seen from these guys, along with their heritage Barena have their sights set high and its time for all their devotion to pay off. Check them out.

we opened our doors late 2008.

- How is business, in your experience since taking the plunge?????

Ok, its been tough at times though, especially in the first year. Starting with no customer base and having to build one up in a short time and in a hard time economically was never going to be easy. But i think we have weathered the storm now.

- Whats the ethos behind Ideology?????

To provide clean, classic clothing in exciting and exclusive labels. Stuff that doesn t directly fit into trends. Quality being paramount.

- How are you finding the current climate and direction in which your shop is going????

Due to the irregularity of business sometimes it does limit us in terms of trying new things out and taking risks. We have tight budgets and have to stick to them. However we are doing very well considering and by providing brands that arent available everywhere and are more niche allows us to have a more specific and loyal customer base.

- You are prob one of the most esoteric independent shops in sheffield, How do you determine your look????

We don't intend to be too different or alienate some people with the look or the way we go about our business. i just think most shops look the same and stock exactly the same brands. i want us to be part of something more substantial than your average menswear shop, have an ethos, have a core clientele that understand us and what we are doing. If people understand and like us then great. The thing i am proudest of really is that we have a customer base of all age groups from teens to guys in their 60's.

- The shop is minimal, whats the inspiration behind it, reminds me very much of how Albam started and Present/Trunk

Personal taste really. What i would like a shop to look like. Using traditional fixtures and fittings, mixing old and new. I love how shops used to look. The traditional outfitters and especially Old American Convenience stores. There is something more homely and warm about them. We have grown into our store. When we first started out it was a lot more minimal, mainly due to less brands and stock though. It is virtually how i want it to be now, just a few more tweaks here and there.

- Stocking some very nice brands of late and bringing them to Sheffield, what do you look for in a design or label????

i look for labels that are well made, classical and ultimately stylish. As well as that i always look to the routes and ethos behind a brand and whether they have the same beliefs that we do. Labels that are in it for the long haul and want to develop a reputation of quality and great looking clothing with tight distribution.

- Any recommendations for next season, whats next or you feel will be successful next season???

Its always hard to say. we try hard to stay away from predicting and using trends. I think people should buy what they want to buy , what there wardrobe is missing at that point.

Everyman should own a pair of well tailored shorts. Jerseys will be big sellers again i think, as well as chinos will continue to be the leg wear of choice in the spring/ summer.

- Whats your background before Ideology????

My brother co owned a store for a short while, i used to help with the buying, its where i got a taste for it. And

- Any personal favourite labels???

For me, it still has to be APC, i would happily have a wardrobe full. Just great simple well cut clothing. Understated. Great Denim.

Our legacy also. They use great fabrics. Their shirting is wonderful.

In terms of brands we dont stock i would say Albam is a favourite and also margaret howell.

- The shop has a great feel to it, any future plans, expand etc????

At the moment we just want to keep on doing what we are doing, get more people aware of us and come visit us. Moving now would be detrimental i think. But i cant rule out a move to a bigger space in the near future. If the right space comes along, you never know.

- What you wearing my son?????

- What is your passion aside from Ideology????

Football, Music and design. Having your own business is a nightmare for staying in touch with good music and discovering stuff.. never seem to have the time to scour gigs, record shops or the internet anymore. i feel well off the pace at the moment.

Football is another massive part of my life. My dad works in the game as a coach/manager. I played myself but due to injury had to stop playing a while ago. I still go to watch his games as well as the odd Wednesday game when i get a free weekend.

- Whats playing on your jukebox?????

Tame impala, an australian band. good stuff, psychedelic 60's vibes.

Back from a little breather...

Its nice to take a break every now and then from the whole internet malarkey, Being at the helm of Offhand takes up so much time and every effort is put into supplying content which is a little different and steering away from what most other blogs out there cover. As the Offhand Community forum continues to thrive and gents from around the globe discuss their obsessions and latest dilemma's with todays culture and clobber, we have taken a well deserved holiday, but all is back where we left off and we continue to get back on track.

As you maybe aware if you follow us or are a member of Offhand, its been quite a year and anything from here on in will surpass any of our expectations. We aim to expand our Newsletter even more which is free from our shops listed on the right. It will also be stocked in a few more stores which have asked for it, We are working closely with a merchandising company regarding product development which involves a few of our passionate members, keeping everything exclusive so watch out for this. The photo above was kindly supplied to us by Cooper & Stollbrand - Private White VC who we feature in our latest issue and discuss their history. hopefully too we will be getting involved with 12th Man for something special, again just for our members and we will have some news on how Fabio has developed a wider range of garments for his SS12 collection. We have to say this looks excellent.

Time is upon us once again for the next installment of our acclaimed fanzine, Issue 04 is online for all you individuals to have a gander. Things have changed dramatically as we have decided to expand this issue to a : (wait for it) whopping 8 pages. When issue 01 started, it was meant to be a nice simple piece of information, nothing outrageous or pretentious, something you could pick up and flick through. Now 3 issues later we are embarking on a different journey, expanding the fanzine and allowing it to grow organically, involving our community to create a handbook filled with knowledge, fun and passion for like minded folk. Your Roots...

Its nice to look back on a part of your life and discover the very essence of where you came from. A bit like clothing, we all have heritage, been intouch and aware of your makeup, the very existence of you. I have always wondered about a certain fascination, The sea, mans plight againest nature, A wonderful backdrop to any being's existence. As far back as i remember I would go and stay with my grandmother for long periods at a time, my grandfather was a captain of the Humber, a river which opens the gateway to Hull. I loved it when he was home, arriving back in his captains hat, long black trench and smoking a pipe. He would sit me on his knee and twist his tales of rough storms and exotic places holding my attention intently. My father also worked the rigs and had spells in the Icelandic seas fishing. The order of the day when he was home would be hot cocoa with the family sharing a mars bar while listening to my father tell epic stories of his journey. It all sounded amazing. One thing both my father & grandfather had in common was their character etched in their exuberant faces, an age line for every story. evidence of hard labour and awful weather.

All of this fullfilled my energy to aspire to take to the sea and seek my own adventure. As I grew older, hitting my teens a good friends father whom was also a seaman would descibe to us the finer points of being at sea, he travelled the world, exploring far away ports and told stories of sampling the continental women, Now being in my teens this only made it more appealing. Here was a character of the ocean, a man who had seen the world, lived his dream, probably spent his childhood listening to his family talk mythically about the oceans and what they offer. My dream was shattered about following my families heritage when i could not even complete a fishing trip off the coast of Bridlington, much to my fathers dismay and this put me off for life. I did try a few more times before admitting defeat and making do with canal trips on the broads or pedalos abroad.

One thing which struck me about fishermen was their ability to want to look well turned out whenever they had the opportunity. both my father and best friends father had their own individual style and dressed well. Their influence from around the world and an eye for quality evolved with their own self image, even my grandfather would look dapper in his uniform, his medals taking pride of place. I carried this aspect into my life, always taking pride in my appearance until it became sub concious.

There are many a clothing brand today who draw influences from the fishermen of yesterday, Norsea Industries, Guy Cotten, North Sea Clothing. SNS Herning. Whether it be functional in design or just simple attire, its history is a great back catalogue to delve into. I remember buying a fishing jumper years ago and it reignited my roots, bringing back the feeling of contentment, listening to those stories which made me smile all them years ago.

Dryfly - Barbour

As dedicated followers of Barbour here at Offhand we like to see certain garments evolve and move through time, Since functional wear became a cornerstone for heritage labels, taking what individual gents have worn from day to day, from technical walking attire through to sailing gear which made its way into any dressers wardrobe, wearing alongside smart footwear and dandy shirts, This is one piece of clothing which worked, There are many brands we could earmark as producing an item specific for some function or another, Belstaff are a fine example, The roadmaster worn by many and identified throughout time as the bikers jacket, more recently Guy Cotten, transferring away from the deep seas and fishing community, making its way into our collections, this is the beauty for some obsessives, finding a brand, not earmarked for the independent shops, but successfully working alongside everyday wear and dressing up.

Oi Polloi were and still are renowned for bringing unknown bespoke labels to our attention, They have given us so much delight in the past with brands like Mephisto.

This brings us to Barbour, A British institute, seen on folk who laze around among the beautiful hills of England, pheasant shooters and farmers alike and transcending over to high end fashion and increasingly likely to find in any town during a night in some swanky bar and real ale public house.

One piece of outerwear which has been around now for a good few years is the Barbour Dryfly, A functional jacket used for, yes you guessed it, fishing. This jacket wouldn't look out of place with a pair of waders, yet team it up with a nice pair of Selvedge, moccasins and madras shirt and you begin to see what all this crossover from function wear is all about. The Dryfly is a great piece and one which tweaked every season just gets better and better. Not changing the overall design of the jacket too much, Barbour just alter the material and colours giving it a new lease of life each time, Judging by SS12 sample, Barbour have finally handed over this great jacket to its Tokito range, A big difference and major improvement to its look are the big buttons replacing the poppers. A jacket which at first can seem too busy in its appearance yet the beauty of Barbour allow the Dryfly to flaunt its functional appearance and become subtle for its wearers, always guaranteed to get a compliment or two, this piece will continue to stand alongside anything which is doing the rounds each season and still manage to look fresh.

Take a look as the Dryfly has evolved with just a few of the designs over the years. Using Duralinen and Carbon Coated materials and even pulling off masterstroke collaborating with Boxfresh. We are sure Barbour will continue to developing the Dryfly as a staple release each season..

Starting its life as the Endurance, A much thicker material and very warm, not compromising on any of its function, it then moved into the spring/summer seasons, releasing both a long and short version, Boxfresh decided to get involved giving its lining a fresh and funky appearance, which did put some people off and the collaboration did baffle some, but this became a much sought after version, Then a lovely carbon coated navy followed along with a duralinen tan colour, both minus the standout net pocket, Then to celebrate how great this jacket is Tokito have added a few more special touches for this coming SS12 season

Valstar...

Valstar evokes a wonderful story of how an English influence became one of Italy's more bespoke traditional companies of this era. After a brief encounter with Mr Cavina of 12thman, this brand was brought to the attention of Offhand Hq and there was talk of this fine Italian label steeped in heritage. The director of Chinese origin, with Milanese connections was called Sai Vita, known to be a great traveller, who was fluent in English had a sense of style and elegance always maintained quality of the garments produced. He immediately introduced his philosophy into Valstar, manufacturing only the best while choosing from the finest textiles.

After 90 years in the business 3 generations of the Vita family have carved an important chapter in the history of Italian menswear. Their designs have evolved, often so ahead of its time.

From a company that began its existence with the production of the Trench coat, and continued to create staple pieces for any gent who wished to express their roots with style.
Today still manufactured in Italy, its quality has progressed over time,

Very sparingly available but you will find them sat alongside brands like Diemme, Monitaly & Mackintosh @ C'H'C'M

Another staple item in the companies success and perhaps their most recognised piece among us like minded individuals is the Valstarino, which was produced in both Microfibre and Down-filled. A fine example of how simple a blouson should be while standing out effortless in its appearance. Copied by so many including a certain SPW company, it remains today Valstar's best seller after been introduced in 1935, way ahead of its time.

I've posted so much about Rapha recently you'd think i was looking for a job. That said, i don't think there is another brand in the cycling market that are nailing quiet like they are. They seem to have found their own niche and majority of what they do lends itself to the unique elegance that road cycling is all about.

Sure, there is always going to be your 'Roadies' who are going to hate them for it, but i think their marketing and attention to detail sets them apart and will/should encourage more and more people to celebrate 'the bike', it is after all "a functional piece of art".

Since it's bank holiday weekend and there is surely a few gents sat at home nursing a hangover, why not watch this recent movie by the Rapha squad of their continental tour...

A while a go you may remember a little excert which I included on the blog titled "I danced with the devil in a haze of moonlight". Well, I have just finished my final paragraph and submitted this to Bill, who has curated a rather select set of gentlemen spanning era's from the 50's onwards to this present day depicting key influences and revolutionary changes throughout British culture and life changing stories. Bill has assembled some amazing characters for this book, which will provide a very eclectic read, giving its readers an insight into how we in society have been shaped by key moments throughout each contributors life experience's.

We are very excited to be a part of this excellent concept and hope to have captured the essence of what certainly shaped my life, and giving any reader the opportunity to relate and educate others.

We dont want to give too much away regarding the actual content, all I will say is the anticipation is building and for all the hard work that Bill has put in to getting this project off the ground, discovering a diverse selection, it is sure to be an inspiring read for all.

We will keep you informed of developments and there will be a signed copy up for grabs upon it's release, with an exclusive interview with William Routledge and more.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bill for asking me to participate in this project and have thoroughly enjoyed revisiting my memories to contribute. I hope to have evoked experiences for every gent to laugh along or maybe even shed a tear to.

You may have noticed a slight rumbling under the surface of today's lifestyle choices. If you follow trends and gents culture like our goodselves then you will certainly be aware of something very special happening.

Tucked away in a terrain so beautiful it would only seem fitting that from virtually nothing a label would hit our shores on a cloud lined with so much passion. Fabio Cavina is a man who single handly has built up a reputation from sheer determination and an ethos which surpasse's any foundation which today's brands are built on.

12th Man, what does it offer a typical gent/dresser? This is a concept in clothing, highly limited runs of beautifully constructed garments, pushing boundaries with garment processing and new techniques.

Where else since the legacy of SPW have we seen such dedication on a small scale and drive to test new designs while keeping to its own heritage? No mean feat at all. If you haven't guessed 12th Man is Italian through and through. Not many stockists have the opportunity to sample or even see this product so it is our pleasure to bring to you this collection. It is a passion that feeds the process and this shows in all its entity when you set eyes on the finished product.

Fabio's new spring/summer collection has expanded organically due to his hard stance on remaining true to his own tradition and keeping the passion alive within himself. A modest man but of epic proportions. A testament to all the hard work and continually pushing his own boundaries.

This season 12th Man have delivered a master stroke, Tinto processed sweats and t.shirt's alongside the staple polo, which has had a revamp. I am not going to sing the praises of the quality and genuine touches that 12th Man show this season, I would hope that you will go and seek for yourself. More is expected for the incoming A/W11 season including new garment and different choices. A very exciting time indeed and one we fully support. If you look beyond the surface and catch that rumble I mentioned earlier, then you may come across 12th Man throwing the odd competition among other well respected online hideouts.

There is always something special about carrying one of Fabio's products. You almost connect with the hard work and authenticity that is evident, now to end we wont tell you how these garments are delivered, that is something very special and unique within itself.

The Barbour Legacy...

It comes as old news to those in the know and i'm sure its something you've thought to yourself many a time over during the last 12months. Barbour is everywhere. Whether it be the Dry-Fly and Internationals you see down the match or the millions of dandies walking round cities, dresses as extra's from Emmerdale, in the 'my wife has dressed me' quilted numbers, one cannot deny this iconic British label has had its hay-day once more.

When in a time of recession and the economy plummeting, it seems labels, shops and designers 'play it safe'. All eyes turn to the 'Classic' look. Barbour IS a classic label in itself.

Our old coal house back in the late 80s-early 90s used to smell of my Dads old waxed Beaufort. That good old battered wax smell. When people can smell you coming your turning heads for the wrong reason, little do they know of the nostalgic aura's these jackets give-off.

Although it seems the 'dandies' have taken over, one cannot forget that they'll one day move on and not everyman and his dog will be wearing it.

A Nomadic Approach...

The seasons are changing and folk are moving on, the same can be said for trends as the mornings become light.

Offhand has embarked on a nomadic approach since we set out late last year. Whatever our stance and direction, we have flowed beautifully and taken paths even unbeknown to ourselves. Delving into realms of subjective matters and touching on things away from the so called norm. It's all in a days work and what shapes exactly what you read when you visit each day. The word Nomadic :

"those who let pasture herds"

In today's society we are modern communities who don't settle in any one place and seek something new... How fitting for Offhand culture. We will continue to evolve in whichever aspect life throws at us and adapt. It was not so long back that I was told I am a Nomadic person and can not stay in one place or concentrate on one thing. This pleased me somewhat and made me realise my ways.
The great thing is we offer a craft, a trade and are adaptable in our approach, that is something wonderful and so easy to attain, once you try to follow ours becomes something unlike yours, and if you are not willing to adapt then you will fail in your quest for your authenticity.

Life is all about change and perception, we can visualize our future quest and behold whatever we want. This is also possible in the fickle world of trends and culture. Grab an opportunity and gather a following, think alike and you can form a community strong enough to shout and change whatever we see fit.

It was only a matter of time before denim resurfaced and in true Offhand style, we manipulated some inside info from way beyond to bring you whats going to be hot soon. For all those that like to keep their finger on the pulse, buck the trend and start early, lose the over saturated moutaineering look and move on. Cause Denim is back. There are a few secrets to the next big look, gone is the distressed/washed out look, innovation is the key, Its about lighter tones, natural or synthetic recycled fabrics, the primitiveness of irregularly-spun aspects, linen blends, treated like decoration, the deceptively rough allure of canvas and leather aspects, the craft-like nobility of basketry effects and braids, the relevance of glued or welded seams, the faded richness of buttons in driftwood. sounds lovely doesnt it. Thats not all, Linen like fabrics will add a new dimension, losing the traditional heaviness. Selvedge has been big for a while now but expect a lighter, more finely tuned pair of strides. their will be a big push towards eco friendly, garment dyed and 100% organic. Fabric technology for lightweight super stretch denim offering second skin effect, body hugging fit and unparalleled comfort, perfectly adapted to the body.
As always trends evolve, folk move on, Dressers are one step ahead, leading by example, not following a look but seeking attire that suits their style and I can assure you denim will bring even the most esoteric like minded soul an option to adapt to.

If you have been buying for next season then you may have picked up on these garments filtering through, If not then open your eyes and stop gathering like sheep over chit chat and seek something different.
Lets not go so far as to say we will all be popping down to buy a pony and ride off into the sunset hand in hand. Denim will be much different almost a recreation of one of the oldest materials known to mankind.

In the depth of passion...

FACT....

There is no reason or relevance as to why you or I share the same passion, If you have managed to stumble upon us by now then I’m sure you will recognise the path we have took.
To think you are at ease with your obsession, it’s a myth, there is no easy explanation to why we live for the end of the month’s pay packet and spend on the latest attire or buy another man’s rubbish turning it into our grail. Some will say this is bad and will ultimately destroy what passion we possess. The key is as with all things in life, its about finding that balance, not hunting or seeking what you desire, but allowing your dream to seek you. How is that possible???

Clear your mind, Free your soul and lose the attitude, then you will soon reap the rewards from your chosen passion,

So soon can passion engulf you and manifest into greed, you misguide your judgement, We become selfish and disillusioned with what it first was that drove you into this fabulous world. If this happens take heed or risk losing that gift for eternity. And if this is so then you simply have not yet found your true passion.

We @ Offhand have seen a drastic change on our journey but stuck to one ethos, and that is we allow ourselves to grow organically, yeah we have said this numerous times, but we will say it again, Who writes the rule book when it comes to passion, how many are simply lost in their passion that they actually don’t realise but they are following. We all have the potential to become whatever we want, aspire to your dreams. Play the perception game with your life and visualize what you want to happen, not what you need, never chase, but lead. That is the key.
I wonder among you merry men, who look upon Offhand as a saviour, some sanctuary where by you feel a part of. This is fine by us but pleased be warned the internet can dance with your demons in many ways. There is no quick fix when you have a passion so drastic that you even put it before your good self. Deny yourself a passion and throw away your life, become meaningless, join the rat race of society.
Its not easy been at the helm of what some call a monster but for once we feel that there is some level to which we have reached. Success or luck even may have contributed, hard graft by two people who refuse to give up or swallow the bitter pill that life offers, instead we want to lead and ride the wave and become so passionate that ultimately nothing will stand in our way, It cant because our passion is authentic, not contrived or diluted, just simply a drive which is feeding itself and walking under the current lifestyle culture all on its own.

Esemplare 2011...

Well my good friends, some of you may know by now, some not so about this fine label which has been around bubbling under the surface for the last two seasons. Esemplare - Quality Italian attire with one of Cp Company original designers onboard things look promising. The thing about this beautiful label is the fact that it produces garments right across the spectrum, whether this be smart formal wear or functional outerwear, you can guarantee the gents of today will transcend into making these clothes fit into their wardrobe.
I had the opportunity to take a sneak peek at their SS11 lookbook and judging by its presentation things do look in fine shape. As usual the Italians have come up with a winner in my book, a few more seasons under their belt and their name will no longer be a secret.
The ethos is a creative freedom allowing extensive research and attention to detail - well this is the Italians were talking about.
Using only natural fibres and fabric treatment to guaran tee comfort which many brands in my opinion try to do but simply overlook. Their code is all about how we dress should match your personality and with whats on offer there is plenty to match even the most essentric dresser.

A nice little brand brewing here, with some bespoke bits sticking to british heritage materials and following a solid ethos. simple but effective no nonsense attire and available from only a handful of stockists.

Their Aw10 stock consisted of Harris Tweed and Beeswax cotton. Like the look of their Macs and see them dropping some tasty knits for the future.

They like to base their look on workwear inspired garments and look to concentrate on a denim inspired range next season. As predicted earlier among our community Dungerees look set to resurface once again.

Its That Funny Old Game......

As the SS11 stock begins to filter through into our minds, brands and labels known by many again all seem to be singing from the same hymn sheet. Less inspiring choice, following similar ethos's and price hikes. Sign of the times maybe, but where lies the indepedence and uniqueness of our shops today? We seem to be sourcing our products more and more from across the border with a more select crowd, the choice out there has become saturated even more, unless your into the contrived hip look everybody seems to be following.
Its not about that here @ Offhand, we strive ourselves on individuality and want something different from todays market, Is this possible???Only time will tell.
There maybe a flip side to this and it could, fingers crossed, push brands into improving what they deliver. We certainly hope so, There have no doubt been some excellent finds and new labels surface, But once again they aint really bringing nothing new to the table.
Folk have mention the trainer market is dead, after an influx of over priced Adi reissues last year, personally, as i have matured i just feel we have handed this responsibility over to the younger generation. Ok they may not be aware of their origin or heritage, but the fact is they are the future and thats what business is about.
I dont hold that much hope for the incoming year, I would love to see somebody take the reins and dictate their own trend once more, source a nice little bolt hole hidden away with gems, kinda like those old record stores you spend hours in digging.
We have seen many a change recently with the likes of SPW taking a hammering, mind you that dont change, everybody on the workwear/moutaineering tip and prices of handmade shoes just rocket.
And thats fine because its what you get from these brands that matters, we dont want to dictate, we have no need to dictate, everybody is free to do what they please, but remember there comes a times when the look becomes tiresome and a little too contrived to the point of no return. Just keep your finger on the pulse.

We danced with devil in a haze of moonlight – circa 89.

An exert I was asked to write for a certain book, which i just thought would share to evoke some memories.

NJOI.....

You could ask me a thousand times if I would change my life and regret my actions, would I be a different person?, could I have done better?, achieved much more?

The answer is NO….

There are some things that can not be replicated, I consider myself very lucky to have lived and experienced an era which I hold close to my heart.

It all began around a time when I had met a certain chap from Leeds, attending Hull College, He was much older than me, Carried himself with a swagger and wore his clobber with style, Aquascutum long mac, cords and Clarks Wallabies, An avid follower of Leeds Utd, The laughs I had and the things I learned were to shape my life forever, We would smoke spliffs in between lessons and popping ohms (acid) when we didn’t attend college. My diploma in Construction Engineering was going downhill, it was losing its edge but I was having the time of my life, dancing between pavement cracks, watching the clouds turn into demons and been chased around college for skinning up in the toilets. It didn’t last long for my counterpart to be excluded from education, and for the first time I felt alone, I had a void and I needed to fill it,

Long gone are the days of euphoric nights and hazy days, the stories are embedded deep in my memory of my experience of the rave culture in the north, I grew up on, which is open to debate, the largest council estate in Hull, Bransholme, this was a place were you didn’t just grow up, you battled with turmoil, ego and status, all of which either destroyed your soul or took you to places not many would experience.

For me it was a pleasure coupled with fear and learning how to be streetwise from an early age.

I always seemed to hang around with the generation above me, I would look at lads earning good money on the estate. Dressing in SPW, Chipie and Chevignon, these guys would travel around the Uk and come back looking smart as fuck. They participated in football, fanatical about Hull City, I aspired to be like them, like many a teenager growing up in this culture, I had nothing else in my life. To make my own statement I decided to get a swallow tattooed on my hand and England on my forearm, Its funny when you look back and see the error of your ways. But just by doing this I seemed to be accepted and was about to experience gang culture.

This was a world I never knew existed and it was harsh, There were two main areas on the estate North and South. I was south Bransholme, My outspoken confidence as a young gun had been noticed and I soon became part of Swallow’s Barmy Army, we would hang around a local pub and venture into South Bransholme looking for a rumble with the enemy, it soon became apparent where this hostitlity was coming from. Club culture was its excuse, a battle for territory, more of which I will mention later. One thing I remember well was a cold winters night been confronted by a gang of about 20 lads who stood across what we called the divide on the estate. No one was prepared to make the first move. There was lots of shouting and bravado. This was my opportunity I thought. If I was going to survive on this estate of high unemployment and uninspired ideas I needed to make a name. I was 17, wearing the clobber, feeling cool, but I wanted more. Here I go, Walking over to the divide infront of our enemy North Bransholme I stood, knees trembling and asked who wanted it.

The fuse paper was lit, A traffic cone was launched at me and and I was pulled back. This resulted unfortunately in one of their lot been stabbed and everybody running around like headless chickens.

I had gained kudos, I had earned respect, and from here on in my rave experience began. By now I was dressing in Berghaus, looking the part. Every weekend started on a Thursday, Juliets, the birthplace for Hull alongside Welly club, I was moving in circles with lads twenty years older than me. I felt on top of the world, mind you felt so sorry for people paying 15-20 pounds for a California or Yellow. ;)

Rave culture is something that you can not explain, everybody has their own interpretation. Throughout the years I have been lucky enough to see grown men cry to records and involved in after parties with the infamous Larry Heard and been handed carrier bags full of magic mushrooms. Its an amazing sight to physically see what I would explain as raining indoors. Through sheer sweat and debauchery the ceiling of Welly club began to drip. Smoke machines, that sweet smell filled the room, darkness engulfed you and your acid trip took you places your mind never knew possible. I would stand and observe lads echoing E’s, Whizz, Trips. By now I had been stupid to move up the ladder and knock out drugs, only to close friends.

A new era, How has 2010 treated you????
Offhand wishes you health and prosperiety for the next year and beyond, set your standard and achieve your dreams, anything is possible with hard graft, focus and a vision.
What a year we have had, It has been a great pleasure guiding like minded folk into the transition of gents culture as it evolves. As we all know there is so much choice, stores and the so called uber fashion magazines are attempting to dictate a look each season for us all to follow.
Forunately Offhand does not get consumed in the whole deck out or trends and instead has begun to initiate a trend all on its own, We have some very secret new labels to unearth in 2011 and a very exciting prospect on the horizon. for those who have joined the community then you will have heard a whisper.
We have a great interview with Noel Gallagher regarding Manchester culture to sink your teeth into.
So whats going on??? What will be different in 2011??? will anything change????
I very much doubt it, society is settled, the leaders in todays market are dictating trends.
This is good for Offhand, why you may ask?, because there is an opportunity for something different, original and exciting to pop its head up and shout very loud, We have aquired a unit to use as an archive and display shop, Thats all Im saying at present.

We want to thank all the followers of the blog, members of our community forum, Will Dixon @ D&A for his support and feedback, John Paul @ End Clothing for his input, Thom for his passion and knowledge from another level and everybody who has given us the feedback, both positive and negative.
Also expect more from the Offhand Fanzine as this continues to grow and be stocked throughout the UK and Europe, spreading its mystique.

Please feel free to get involved and become a part of what we are about, Lets no longer look and lose our identity by following trends, show your authentic self, let it surface, be true to yourself and you will find your own style.

As this year draws to an end, Off_Hand has embarked on a journey with a panache unrivalled by many. It has been nothing but a pleasure to finally be receiving recognition for all the hard work put in by not only ourselves, but the admin and mods who maintain the forum.

The general feel is that of a relaxed manner with some top lads, gents and dressers onboard.

If you have been forunate to follow us then you will know of our collaboration of unique artwork with Mastrum, essential buys and our first Unsung Heroes interview with none other than Chaz Devlin of Casual Connoissuers.

Next up for the new year is another one of our exclusive interviews, and let me tell you all now, this guy knows his shizzle.

Thom has delivered so much passion to Off_Hand, tinkering away in the background, securing an HQ for an archive and design space. As you can imagine we are very excited by the prospects of these ventures.

His creativity is what makes us tick and the plans that this guy keeps under wraps are second to none in evolving Off_Hand to the next level.

There is no other way to describe our journey thus far. It has been an eye opener as to what is actually possible. You can expect to see a very likely collaboration with some label early next year and much much more.

Our intention is to break the mould whereby fashion thinks, for us it is about forgetting the past and looking towards new innovative functional wear, giving our people a say before anything goes into production.

2010 has been a journey where we have met so many talented and knowledgable like minded people who have showed their hand and become a part of Off_Hand.

-What are your honest feelings towards the emerging casual market? Would you like to offer your feeling towards the fact that the Casual era has become a fashion movement ?

Honestly? I think the 'casual' market is all a bit santised at the moment, I mean, the only real market I see is a forced, contrived look, the 80s revivalists which has ironically and undoubtedly been spawned by recent films like Awaydays and the Firm, it's a fairly ugly look in my very honest opinion (always preferred the dressed down look myself) lots of stores have been throwing that out for a while now - a garish re-packaged look of sportswear and yet more boring second and third issues of old models of trainers, when I was really bang into this thing we hunted about for what we wanted and what we thought was cool, obsessing over the silly little things, we never queued up outside Size for the latest deliberately limited Adidas release, hyped up and being made to feel we must have it, quickly, it was never about that. There's no imagination a lot of the time. Someone said recently on a forum 'gloits' in their bright shiny look-at-me Stone Island coats teamed with office worker haircuts and Blue Harbour jeans essentially trying to achieve a look of something and somewhere they'd never actually venture themselves. I can't argue with that.

The irony is they all look the same, kids in Fila tracksuit tops and stuff, it's shit, the whole idea is looking a bit different to the norm, standing out, it's all very sheep like and just not what it should be about. I guess it has become a fashion movement, has been for a few years really with the stores that try and cash in on it and that's it right there, if you believe in the whole 'ethos' of what it was all about, then how could it ever be a market or a fashion fad? it is what it is, different vibes for you and I, that's the beauty of it, the lastest shimmering Stone Island jacket can look cool, but so can something you've picked up off eBay for a tenner, done the right way, it's not just about spending loads of money, certainly not about buying into a look, I see peole with all the top end gear who just look really uncomfortable and enforced. Apologies if that sounds in any way bitchy, but you did ask for honesty.

To me now, I'm from that background and fairly proud of that but it's all a bit tired and old hat these days, it's where I got a real passion for clobber and style from but I find it harder and harder to even class myself in that mould these days, it's about style more than it is any kind of a scene for me now. Don't get me wrong there's still lots of people who live for this as we do and have done, but the very fact you mention it being a bit of a fashion movement now says it all, for every cool, clued up individual, there's dozens of sheep out there who just want to absorb your hard work for a while until they move on to the next fad.

What we do comes under that banner of course, but there are many different people into our stuff than just football types, I like that, we have created our own market, a real crossover. From the off we went with what we liked, football, film, music - a real lifestyle, it's all stuff we are totally passionate about, we do it, we've been there, seen it, done it, we've got the gear. We were the first to put film and music stuff on our t-shirts, not because it might sell a few but because nobody was doing what we wanted to see. We have influenced and inspired others out there, it's not difficult to notice that.

-How would you descirbe yourself in three words.

Obsessive, individual, passionate / a clothes bore.

-Favorite brands of all time? Reasons?

Years ago I lived for all the usual designer stuff, as a youngster with a disposable income around the turn of the century, I'm not going to lie I was really into the stuff that you look back at now and laugh at, I had the plaid baseball caps and shiny, reflective glow-in-the-dark coats, I was wearing goggles in my hood way before they became a daft novelty like they are now. At the time they were cool and we loved them, I know it sounds a little arrogant but I must have broke a handful of labels to the masses in years gone by, I wouldn't say that if it wasn't true. I've seen it all, been laughed at and questioned for wearing certain things, only for those poking fun to be wearing down the line, it does happen, I don't think it's as easy or even fair to class any of the stuff I wear as 'casual' brands, you can't pigeon hole stuff like you used to, it can crossover from time to time but I'm happy mixing things up now and want to spend money on stuff I'll wear for ages and still looks good with age and wear and tear, from coats to nice denim, I buy everything to wear, not to just look at, more about a classic but tinkered with look really, considered but not contrived, some people get it, most probably just think I'm a scruffy c*nt. I tend to sometimes rub folk up the wrong way, especially with recent stuff I've done online, as many people give me grief than they give me any kind of nod, but I think that's actually a good thing, I'm not seeking approval though, I just do what I do for myself and enjoy that, I think it all gets a bit c*ntish having to justify yourself over what you are wearing, I mean, it's only fucking clothes at the end of the day, we can be worse than women.

I'd say the likes of 6876 which I've been wearing for a long time, Garbstore is a great label too, both are passionate designers who do their own thing and do it the way it should be done and really nice guys aswell. I love Stansfield's stuff too, most of the 'casual' crowd wouldn't get that, but it's bringing back really old, smart styles to the modern day with a twist and I love that. I think one of the more recent labels on the scene Heritage Research is fantastic too, again a lot of passion and thought goes into what they do and it's all about good honest gear that lasts a lifetime as opposed to a couple of seasons. I've always worn shoes, which stems from working in that environment for several years, I have to say certain Clarks models have always been on my feet going back to childhood really, why change something you like? I also have a slightly unhealthy taste for specialist European comfort shoes too. I don't think there's ever really been such a choice, there's loads of great British stuff being done right now with the likes of Oliver Spencer, Albam, Folk, Cabourn, Universal Works, then there's the Scandinavians who are a cool bunch Our Legacy, Norse Projects, Acne etc. Then of couse the US stuff from the old classics to the likes of EG and Woolrich W.M. plus the other stuff from the other side of the globe which is hard to obtain and even harder to fit in.

I'd say above and beyond my favourite label is 'vintage', I'm always looking out for something more obscure and unique, it's easy (if you have it) and actually quite a pleasure to go out and spend silly money on the latest big thing. But most things can all be traced back to older stuff, I like to seek out the originals from old goretex coats to military wear, that's when I'm happiest, the downside is it can never last for long and it really is a badly kept secret sometimes.

-Recommend an up and coming brand? Reasons?

I see the odd one or two peeping out and intend to keep an eye on, as I said above Heritage Research are good guys worth checking out. There's a lot of really good shops across the country now too, it's usually a case that they all stock the same or similar stuff, everything has changed since a certain store in Manchester came along, that's a fact, I like it, I see people get heated about that too, which I don't really understand. I've personally seen that grow from fairly humble beginnings, from when it opened visiting in my lunch hour to what it is today, they have set the path for many to follow and introduced a lot of labels to these shores too. They have created the whole lifestyle anti-fashion thing too, which is only a good thing in my book. Like I said above, as a result the choice has never been as good as it is now, the internet has made the world a tiny place aswell.

- How did you get into your current line of work?

I don't think things ever really went according to plan for me, I tried the whole college thing straight from school and didn't enjoy it, perhaps now I would and it's something I sometimes think about now I'm older and a bit wiser, I was expecting to go on for several years in further education and University, but just wanted to leave, all my mates went straight into work, earning proper money for the first time, I was skint, so then followed lots of jobs from one or two I actually enjoyed to the absolute mundane and depressing. I guess in a way that shapes you, I wouldn't say I'm a quitter but there's been plenty of times when I've jumped ship from wank jobs I hated, why stay in them? I'm thirty and still feel thirteen sometimes, I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. I learned to really value and appreciate money the hard way, too, so a few years back my brother and I just wanted to have a bash at doing something we wanted to do, it's worked out alright really, we are very self sufficient and a very small operation, but we have big plans and intend to take it as far as we possibly can. The fact we aint half bad at photography and design work is a very essential ingredient though, it's certainly not an easy avenue to go down, you need an awful lot of help and kick ups along the way, I will say who and what you know is pretty important.

-Most influential person in your life? and on your work?

Hard to say really, I can be a bit of an oddball, there's so much inspiration out there from really iconic people to characters in film, I get hints and tips from all walks of life, mountaineers, film stars, outdoorsmen, cyclists, fishermen, teachers, trainspotters, smartlt dressed old men, even geeky and unintentionally cool people. Old school is a term I often over use, but it makes sense to me. I recently saw some footage from a 70's march on something, can't remember exactly, miners, hippies, ban the bomb, whatever, they all looked cool as fuck, cagoules, tweed, facial hair, rucksacks, woolly jumpers, woolly hats, they didn't set out to look cool, they just did, that ticked my box, many would laugh at that, but many would laugh at the fact I think Action Man is a genuine icon aswell.

-We've identified you as a Unsung Hero, someone who sits underneath society, not everyone knows you but in your field your a bit of name? Who are yours if you have any?

I'm flattered you would think that, but there's more than a grain of truth there, but I'm far too modest to go into that. As I said above I really do take inspiration from more unlikely and obscure sources, I would actually cite film directors amongst my heroes as much as actors and musicians, footballers, authors and the like, people who make a statement, stand up for what they believe in, express their passion on their own blank canvas. It's the same formula really, designers, actors, musicians, directors, they are all creators and innovators in their own field. The fact we all get it too is what makes them our heroes I guess.

-What are you excited about right now?

I'm part of a magazine which is being taken to the next level as I speak, it's all very interesting and hard work for those involved and I hope it pays off, I genuinely believe it has the potential to fill what I think is a very big gap at the moment. I am excited about what's around the corner, making the right contacts, meeting interesting people and getting out there in the real world as I have been doing the last year. Getting big boxes through the post of something you've designed and seeing that gamble come off is a really great feeling, seeing your sketch turned into a real thing, can't be beaten, I want to experience a whole lot more of that.

- What are you looking forward to seeing next season?

For other brands I prefer this time of the year, big jackets, hats and scarves and the like, they are usually ahead of themsleves to the point where we see what's out next winter next summer, I'm always interested in that. I'm looking forward to seeing stuff more in the flesh too, I've been pretty lucky this year in that I've had a peak behind the scenes at a couple of places, seeing how it all works, there's a couple of places I plant to visit in the future for more of the same, it's fairly fascinating to me and certainly inspiring.

- Can we expect anything new? or different from Casual Co next year?

I'm hoping next year is an even more productive year for us, we have a lot of plans, some accessible some ambitious, I can't really say a great deal as I have said too much in the past, I think it's all about working with more people, collaborating and taking things up a notch now. We have made our first foray into outerwear and I'm excited by that, people may think it's just a basic cagoule, it is, but we have done it the right way, there's a genuine connection there to what we have tried to replicate and I'm very happy with it, though that is only the start of what I'd like to realise, saying and doing are too different things though, we need to stay true to ourselves and not get carried away. We did our bobble hat for the third year running recently and the demand was just too great, they went within hours, it was pretty crazy really, there was no other option but to get more, so there's quite a few more of them on the way before the end of the year too.

The Beginning of The End!

R.I.P. Found_NYC

We foresaw but never expected this...

It hurts to inform you that the beloved FOUND_NYC forum has closed its doors and will be no more. An established community, which has not only sourced but also dictated casual gents culture over the last three years. Its members and contributors transformed the forum into a invaluable archive of SPW history and ended in a masterstroke collaborating with Mastrum on a x100 limited piece, the forum jacket. Was this the demise of Found? Should all good things end on a high? Surely this is not what was intended for Found_NYC.

The bottom line is, it just proves that the standard, the passion and the exclusivity of SPW is no longer what it once was. We now are controlled by a saturated market whereby one-up-man-ship no longer matters. Where does this leave an era of like-minded folk who shared the passion and experienced the history of 80s casual culture?

The legacy will continue in whichever form you want to follow. For those of Off_Hand it has never been about a following of trends, just a passion to find and innovate the next generation of dressers.

Lets pull together once more.

Your Off_Hand?

When the weathers this bad up north it leaves me in somewhat of a predicament. My usual avenues of escapism and development falter through, the fragility of my determination rings outs. No riding my beautiful bike in the rain, went for a walk in the Derby-shire peaks on Sunday and it was cut short when the sun went way, almost left me with a sprained ankle.

So it's back to drawing board for the development of Off_Hand. We have come so far in this last three months, so much so we've surpassed our own expectations. The Off_Hand community is brimming with creativity and connecting people from different UK tribes. Gents seem to be coming together for the greater good.

So what avenue to explore next? The forum appears to be the place where good things can be achieved and surpass other forums by giving our audience the chance to dictate (via our democracy) the direction of this exclusive club.

We are looking to develop a British-made, high-end clothing brand for our members to have exclusive rights. Between 25-100 only of each piece, hand crafted, using only the finest in sourced materials. We want this brand to be just as much for you as it is ours. We encourage you to give your thought on what you would like to see coming from our first Off_Hand collection via our forum. The thread has been posted so lets hear your thoughts.

Setting our Sights....

You can look as far ahead into the future as you like, but as they say hindsight is a beautiful thing. Life is all about hunting the hunted, uncovering the truth and believing in your intuition. We take from this world anything that fits our personal profile, breeding individuality and evolving our creativity.

There are folks who seek attention, whether this be unwanted or otherwise. We are no different but follow a route which has become almost unplanned. To ride that wave till it breaks the surf and come out on top still standing is an achievement so few are able to contemplate. Being cavalier in our approach towards life feels so liberating, having something take you on a journey, rather than pushing for something.

Some would call it casual, perfunctory or even cool.

We are something more aloof.

Nothing stands in the way, there is no reason, no plan, just a simple understanding which synchronises our world where we stand today, untouched, unfazed and uncovering different avenues, unexplored pastures within gents culture.

There is too much information around us in this technological age that our way of life is blurred. Many see a path forged by others and follow, creating identities which don't sit right beside our ego,

The key is, to just be, look back deep into your roots and discover your destiny, it is there, already mapped out. If you want to change it then do so, but be very aware you are not following something which creates a storm within yourself,

Dresser - A Term.....

There is a common misunderstanding in today's culture about a term which has been lost through generations gone by. Among the so called casual scene and early 80's people feel and secured their ego's by labelling themselves with groups relating to fashion. It's happened for a very long time, right back to ancient times. You were judged by what you wore and put into a class.

It's no different today. There are so many terms used it becomes almost boring and meaningless.
Look back at identity? Everybody wants or feels that they need to belong to something, nobody is comfortable with being at peace, ego is magnified, stakes are raised and everybody loses sight of reality culture has developed into.
Today's generation are lost, their controlled by diverse marketing ploys, the young people of today are clones of one another. Its very difficult to walk through the city and notice even the slightest of individuality.
A dresser, a term used very loosely today, almost forgotten was something many grew up with, think back to the 40's, they all dressed up, smart as larry, but again everybody followed, what did they follow??? A trend that's what?
To me, there is something very interesting about the the terms and trends used and abused by today's designers.
We are living in an age were all of a sudden the casual era is now a fashion. It's cool to be a casual without having any knowledge, you can spend your hard earned cash and a few clicks on the web and hey presto your looking like Danny Dyer out The Business. Now don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with that, but to me you really have to grow up in the era and its in your blood, you cannot replicate this.
Now we see what is happening. unfortunately again to Off_Hand this is old ground, beards are cool once again, everybody wants to own a vintage racer and its time to roll up the chinos and wear deck shoes. Everybody is following each other, Shame really.
A dresser is somebody you will hardly ever see, they dont venture out, visit the norm, your more likely to see these guys in some obscure night, not even advertised, its like an inner circle, all coupled with so much knowledge, and I'm not just talking attire. These guys dont make an effort, they have what it takes, they dont brag, they dont follow, and more importantly they dont have to lead. You will prob only come across a handful of dressers in your lifetime, and when you do you will know, because there is a unwritten code of respect, a feeling what is mutual, no ego, just common ground.
We are not saying its not Ok to be cool or act it, the fact is you cannot be it. You either possess this wonderful art or you suffer and will forever follow fashion like a parasite.

In the end your identity will be lost forever!

Feeling Extreme....

Harness the power within yourself was always a term I have carried within myself through life's encounters. Whether this be good, bad or defying death, there is always an ability within our spirit to overcome any situation thrown at us. Going back some years my daily thoughts consisted of getting by each day unscathed, would i survive the troubles i had brought upon myself???

There was always an issue i had to deal with. Life is as hard as you a make it. You can push yourself to extremes or sit back and let life take you on its own journey.

Off_Hand has embarked on this journey, from the beginning of an opportunity, which could so easily have passed by. Two folk from complete different ends of the spectrum met by chance and set out to offer something alternative to what we read and are influenced by today. This has become a passion that has always been there, it was just about finding somebody or something to harness each other's power. Its been an inspiring journey so far. From our first post relating to Yorkshire culture, which now seems so apt, we have come a long way, securing a wealth of knowledge and expertise and evolving into something very exciting. All this from what???

A meeting of minds........

We all know the terms 'chalk & cheese', 'opposites attract' but looking deeper, we are no different in our approach. One half of Off_Hand is probably the heart and soul of what we are about and the other is its blood, feeding the heart, even starving it on occasion's. This works and is the ethos of a great team. There was never any set plan, everything is happening and will continue to progress organically. That's what passion and commitment and possessing that little touch of extremism does for you.

Take this thought away, Be prepared to not follow suit and worry how the government will save you, we are powerless to control our destiny. Take pride in being a part of something, join hands, feel proud and help one another to achieve your dreams, that way it will become a hell of a lot easier.

And that is what we aim to do....

There was that time only yesterday gone, that is unique in its presence. The time : 10:10am, 10.10.2010. Whatever you may have been doing at this special time could have had some significance to your life. Known as a lucky time to marry according to culture, its funny how others adopt that tradition. A bit like fashion in my opinion, but so very different to style. Let's look at today's saturated market honestly and identify the negative effects that are in transistion. Whether we like it or not, culture and fashion is being driven by senseless marketing which has flipped the script from trying too hard to be in the uber-zone. Its a wonderful thing to see and let something take control of you, a nudge in the right direction if it steers off course.

But there is something I am seeing and liking of late within culture, and that is the complete diversity in mixture of individuality and people expressing themselves. Its a wonderful thing to have the abilty to just chuck on something and instantly look good. Its a gift seldom seen in many folk. As Britain is on its knees and we are told that out of every £100 pound spent, 60 odd finds its way back to the government, is this an issue we are to address? Will it change anything? Its like anything in life; we either put up or we change it. By the way I spent my 10.10.10.10 shaving off my beard, which I have had for some time, A significant action you may ask, depends how its viewed....

Offhand didnt do much around the magical time or at least we believe nothing happened, until I thought and looked that little harder. We had recieved some info very important relating to the growth and development @ HQ.

The time has come to move beyond this current social depression and move forward with us into a new era of culture. Off_Hand is something of a mystery to most. We seek to contest culture and advise you on ways to make your life better. Some say were cultural guru’s, others call us genius but one thing is for certain, our integrity is never in question. While your sat questioning why your spending your money following your football, 11 multi-millionaires who sit playing Pro Evo when not training, womanizing orange women in exclusive bars we can only dream of entering, we’ve decided to move on, quietly contemplating how to improve this desperate culture up north. Thatcher never gave a fuck about us and now it seems many have lost hope in Nick Clegg as the north looks to be on its knees all over again. We are far from informed in the world of political satire but we know how we feel and its time for us to pull together while the Leadership consider whether they’ve lost the faith of the working class. We’re not stupid enough to think we can cause a revolution but we can at least cause a stir, get people talking and get back our community spirit, closer and more supporting, like a society i remember before they closed the damn pits and no-one had mobile phones. If people are still interested in dressing like there in the 80s, next time your in your Saturday best give a thought to those times and acknowledge that they may just be around the next corner and times maybe about to repeat themselves.

Twisting The Time While Doing The Tango....

There is something very exuberant happening within the walls of Offhand at the minute, while the world stands still and follows trends and patterns with no substance, We are pursuing new ground. Its been a productive year since Offhand was born, many avenues have been explored and new pastures discovered. We have a choice, Do we follow, Do we steal, do we borrow?????.

Honestly, we do nothing - We just allow it to grow organically

The dialogue of Thom has surpassed the imagination of most, a delivery second to none, so now its time to have my say. All that matters to me and Offhand is that we continue to evolve. It's time my friends to twist time, delve into the archives and find a place untouched, lead by example. We spend many an hour drinking coffee and brainstorming and still come up with the same ethos, when two people explore their own imagination and become one, feeding off each others passion, we leave our rivals in tatters. Its not looking great at the moment for fashion/independent stores as Im sure you will agree, everybody is playing safe, it seems there's a saturation of too many ideas, all walking the same walk, nobody is setting a trend, do we have to look towards the likes of Dries Van Noten et all and look ridiculous? Lets not become parasites of this world as you walk around and allow your soul to survive on the sociable ego. All I ask is take a chance, find and feel your passion in life, because I tell you one thing, it is there, hidden away amongest all the learnt behaviour, you are conditioned. It certainly doesnt have to be like that, unlock your inner power and allow your spirit to dance the tango with other souls.

You will know if they dont want to dance with you....
